Titian Adoration Magi | Man in Armour | Mary Magdalene
Titian “Adoration of the Magi” at Ambrosiana Gallery Pinacoteca in Milan Italy
Titian (1488 — 25 August 1576) “Adoration of the Magi”
Painting - Oil on Canvas (120 x 223 cm) 1557-1560This painting by Titian beautifully illustrates the motherly sweetness of the Madonna for her Child.
The way she holds him close to her while gently approaching him to the kneeling Mage King so that he can kiss his little foot reveals all her tenderness towards him.
The look of the Virgin Mary is veiled with sadness; she is pensive, she does not “know”, but she senses and senses the tragic destiny of her son.
The Child has an almost restrained attitude, unlike an infant who is still ignorant and passive.
His hand seems to bless the king kneeling before him while looking intently at him.
The simple decoration of the barn underlines the striking contrast between the simplicity of the clothing of Joseph and the Virgin with the display of the wealth of the Kings, the bright colours and the refinement of their clothing, their gold gifts encrusted with jewels.
The animals represented by Titian, the dog, and the horses do not seem concerned by the event. The little dog in the foreground is urinating on one of the wooden pillars in the barn, and the horses are getting impatient.
On the other hand, the horsemen and the servants in the right half of the picture are very interested in the scene; they watch and follow it attentively and discuss it among themselves.
The picture is built on the dynamics of a diagonal of characters starting from the top of the right part with the movements of two riders.
By following the gesture of the first, which shows what is happening by stretching its arm near the turban, the second, who bends to the side to contain the hustle and bustle of the escort entirely turned towards the tribute ceremony, we arrive directly at the light body of Christ offered to the world by separating himself from the body of the Madonna dressed in a blue cloak.
He is the smallest character, but Titian was able to put him in the foreground in a brilliant way thanks to this construction without the slightest ostentation, yet with perfect efficiency.
