“Funerary monument of Franchino Rusca”

Sculpture - Marble (670 x 342 x 77 cm) 1350

Franchino Rusca was born in 1302 to one of the most influential families in medieval Como.

He died in 1339 after numerous vicissitudes and betrayals on the part of the Visconti, who had forced him to cede the city of Como to Azzone Visconti in exchange for that of Bellinzona and its surrounding territories.

Initially, this funerary monument was located in the church of San Francesco in Como.

Above a sarcophagus supported by three lions is a Lombard Gothic arch with a Madonna and Child in the centre.

At the top of the ark, Christ gives his blessing from the mandorla, symbolizing the resurrection supported by two angels.
