Giovanni Battista Tiepolo “Joshua Stops the Sun” Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan in Italy
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (March 5, 1696 - March 27, 1770)
“Joshua Stops the Sun”
Painting - Oil on Canvas (28.5 x 71.8 cm) 1737
This Tiepolo canvas is painted monochromatically on a gold background, increasing its dramatic character.
At the battle of Gibeon, where he was pursuing the Amorrhites, Joshua asked Yahweh to stop the sun and the moon to help him achieve a complete victory over these enemies of the people of Israel.
“The sun stood still, and the moon stood still until the nation took revenge on its enemies.”
(Josh 10:13)
The scene of the battle represented by Tiepolo is very violent.
On the left, a rider pierces the heart of a fallen soldier; other riders shoot arrows or stab the enemy with their swords while dead and wounded litter the ground.
On the right side, we see Joshua on horseback, looking up at the sky and raising his arm to show the sun.
